Parent Partnership
Regular contact with parents and carers is a critical component of our approach. This is essential in order to both generalise the skills our students learn at school, as well as to support and empower parents.
Having a family member with autism can impose tremendous stress on family life. Routine activities such as mealtimes, transitions, and going for outings can often be challenging. One of our goals is to help our students participate positively in family life. This is only possible through a close partnership with parents.
We involve parents in the following ways:
- Home/School Communication Book: this is used to keep daily contact with parents and is used to communicate any information that may be relevant to the student (i.e. whether or not the student slept well, if they ate their lunch at school etc.) Parents may also call or email the school and/or relevant staff members.
- Pupil progress – parents are involved when developing the student’s Individual Learning Plan Plan and Behaviour Support Plan. Progress is discussed on a regular basis.
- Parent events – such as coffee mornings, parent open days and parent evenings where parents can discuss their child’s progress.
- Training – Training workshops are organised at school on a regular basis based either on the need to share information or on parent interest and demand.
